China will launch the Tianwen-3 Mars Sample Return Mission in 2028, the first mission ever to bring samples from Mars back to Earth to search for life on the red planet, with expert input from HKU.
HKU’s Laboratory for Space Research was the host of the 16th Asia-Pacific Regional International Astronomical Union Meeting, marking the first time this flagship event has been held in the city.
After 20 months of monitoring, the ‘China Sky Eye’ telescope helped HKU and international astronomers uncover the first decisive evidence of the binary origins of Fast Radio Bursts located about 2.5 billion light-years away.
HKU proudly inaugurated the Hong Kong Institute for Astronomy and Astrophysics with a plaque-unveiling ceremony on November 3, attended by world-leading scientists and government dignitaries to advance astronomical research in the region.
