As part of its 115th anniversary events, the University of Hong Kong hosted ‘HKU Tram Connect’ – a student engagement initiative fostering unity and embodying the University’s enduring commitment to forging lasting bonds. Organised by the Centre of Development and Resources for Students, the event transformed three of Hong Kong’s historic trams into a vibrant platform for cross-cultural exchange, bringing together local and international students with University leadership.
Held at the long-established Whitty Street Tram Depot in Shek Tong Tsui, the event was attended by Professor Xiang Zhang, President and Vice-Chancellor of HKU, along with Mrs Cherry Tse, Executive Vice-President (Administration and Finance), Professor Jay Siegel, Vice-President and Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Teaching and Learning), and Professor Kelvin Yeung, Dean of Student Affairs, engaging in meaningful dialogue with students against the nostalgic backdrop of Hong Kong’s iconic tramway.
Professor Zhang paralleled the University’s legacy with the tram’s century-old role in uniting communities, reinforcing the anniversary theme ‘Reaching Out, Rising Higher’: “This historic tram mirrors our University in many ways – a Hong Kong icon that connects different parts of the community, offering a moving perspective of our vibrant city. With 115 years of legacy, HKU will continue our proud traditions in supporting our community, connecting with our citizens, and cultivating the next generation of global thought-leaders with commitment to Hong Kong, our nation and the world.”
The event also paid tribute to a recent student-led gratitude campaign recognising the contributions of campus support staff and community workers, from custodians and librarians to transport workers. Student ambassadors who led this gratitude campaign and presented floral tributes and notes of appreciation to various unsung heroes were specially invited to participate, exemplifying HKU’s culture of mutual respect.
Student participants praised the event as a heartfelt celebration of HKU values. “As a local student, this tram ride was a wonderful way to connect with professors and peers outside the classroom. It truly embodied the spirit of ‘Reaching Out,’” said Ethan Leung Pak-hei, a Bachelor of Arts student. Phyo Thiri Lwin from Myanmar had the same thought: “As an international student, this event made me feel deeply connected to the HKU family and the city.
